What Is Cosmetic Orbital Decompression Surgery?

Cosmetic orbital decompression surgery is a cosmetic procedure that can help those with protruding eyes to achieve a more desirable cosmetic look. It is most commonly used for those who have issues with their eye size, shape or position, such as Graves’ disease or exophthalmos. This procedure involves reshaping the bones around the eyes in order to reposition the eye and reduce the appearance of bulging. While it does not treat the cause of the condition, it does provide cosmetic benefits for a more natural, rested look.

Procedure Overview

The cosmetic orbital decompression surgery procedure will begin with the patient receiving anesthesia to ensure a comfortable experience. During surgery, a small incision is made in either the lower or upper eyelid and bone around the eye sockets is removed to reduce the bulging appearance. We only shave away enough bone to allow the eye to move back to a more natural-looking position. Once this reshaping has been completed, the incisions are then closed and sutured shut. In most cases, you will be able to return home as soon as your surgeon finishes the procedure that same day.

What Is the Recovery Like for Cosmetic Orbital Decompression Surgery?

The recovery period for cosmetic orbital decompression surgery is generally about 1-2 weeks and patients are able to resume their regular activities soon after this period. You can also resume wearing contact lenses around this time. However, you will be provided with instructions for proper post-operative care so you always know what to do in your individual situation. Follow-up visits may be necessary to ensure the best possible results and to allow us to track your recovery progress.
Patients usually take about 1-2 weeks off from work to allow their bodies to focus on recovery. By resting and following your post-op instructions, you will see a shorter recovery period overall while also improving your final outcomes and results.

When Can I See Results?

After cosmetic orbital decompression surgery, patients often report feeling more confident in their appearance. Results are often visible soon after the procedure, although it may take several months for them to become fully apparent as swelling subsides and healing progresses. But since the bone has been removed, your eye will move into its new position almost immediately. The results are often subtle but can have a lasting, positive impact on your appearance and confidence for years to come.
