What Is Microneedling?

Also called collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a nonsurgical treatment designed to activate the body’s natural healing response. In contrast to light-based treatments, microneedling is entirely mechanical. It involves running a special device over the treatment area. This device uses ultrafine needles to create tiny punctures (micro-injuries) in the skin. Though small, these punctures are enough to activate the body’s natural response to wounds, which involves a notable increase in collagen production. At the same time, the treatment increases skin remodeling, leading to a reduction in a range of concerns for skin texture, laxity, and pigmentation.

  • Improved appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines
  • Skin texture improvements (smoother, more even)
  • Reduced hyperpigmentation (from age spots or sun damage)

  • Shrinking enlarged pores and clearing clogged pores

Is a Microneedling Treatment Right for Me?

Microneedling is open to patients across all age groups. Patients with age-related concerns can see notable improvements, while younger patients can use the treatment to head off signs of aging. Additionally, it is open to and safe for patients of all skin tones. However, we still take the time to thoroughly consult with each patient before moving forward with treatment. This one-on-one visit with Joshua Fisher, PA-C, creates a safe space to openly discuss your goals and weigh your available options.

Treatment Overview

Your treatment visit for microneedling should take between 30 and 60 minutes. However, this can vary depending on the specific areas treated and if you want to treat multiple areas at once.
  • Preparation: We carefully clean the treatment area to reduce any risk of inflammation or infection. We also usually apply a topical numbing cream to foster a more comfortable experience.
  • Treatment: We utilize the Skin Pen precision device, which is the gold standard for microneedling. The device is run over the area to be treated. The pattern of application and depth of penetration are adjusted based on your procedure plan. On request, we will add additional growth factors to your treatment, which further enhance your results.
  • Serum will be applied to your skin post-treatment to keep it moist and aid in recovery.

What Is the Recovery Like for Microneedling?

While a minimally invasive treatment, microneedling still does require a brief and mild recovery period. Unlike with surgical procedures, you will not need to take comprehensive downtime. However, you will still need to keep a few things in mind. These include:
  • It takes about 1 week for your skin to heal. During this time, some redness and swelling are normal. Some skin flaking toward the end of the week is also normal as your skin remodels itself.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, excess sun exposure, and saunas until your skin has healed. Particularly, be careful while your skin is still red after treatment, avoiding anything that could cause irritation.
  • Stay hydrated and keep your skin clean with a gentle cleanser. Together, these can help your skin heal more quickly and promote better results.

When Can I See the Results?

Most patients begin seeing visible improvements about 2 weeks after a microneedling treatment. By this point, your skin will have healed. Skin remodeling and collagen production will be well underway. You can expect to see continued improvements for several weeks as your body continues its response to the treatment.

A single microneedling treatment can deliver clear improvements to your skin. However, you may need a few separate visits to fully reach your goals, especially for more notable concerns. Typically, patients only need 3 to 5 sessions to achieve the results they set out to see.

How Long Do Microneedling Results Last?

Patients can see improvements that last for about 6 months or beyond. Result duration will depend on several factors. For example, concerns like scar reduction should be permanent. Other benefits, such as wrinkle reduction or texture improvements, will depend on the number of treatments. Results from multiple sessions will build on each other, providing longer-lasting improvements. Additionally, having a healthy lifestyle will help promote results that last from months to over a year.
